Stitch Meshes for Modeling Knitted Clothing

The authors of this SIGGRAPH 2012 paper propose a new modeling technique that builds yarn-level models of complex knitted garments for virtual characters. We start with a polygonal model that represents the large-scale surface of the knitted cloth. Using this mesh as an input, our interactive modeling tool produces a finer mesh representing the layout of stitches in the garment, which we call the stitch mesh. Read more.

Short Movie: ‘Syndicate’ narrative film

Production company Vincent has done a very nice movie to beat the drum for the game Syndicate. CINEMA 4D was used to 3D animation. Vincent worked closely with the game developers and art directors at EA & Starbreeze in conceiving the overall styling and script writing of the in-game cinematics and trailers for the game. Blender 2.63 Released

The Blender Foundation has released Blender 2.63 with an enormous number of improvements, fixes and additions. This release was focused on integrating and stabilizing the long awaited BMesh modeling system, which has full support for N-sided polygons and many new modeling tools. New tools include Dissolve, Inset, Bridge, Vertex Slide, Vertex Connect, Bevel, and improved versions of Knife, Subdivide and Rip. Read more.

Trimble acquired SketchUp from Google

Sketchup along with the 3d Warehouse will leave the Googleplex to join Trimble’s hub. It was announced on the  Official Google SketchUP blog. There are some comments from worried users about the future of this wonderful piece of software, used by more than 30 millions of users. The annoucement asserts that there will always be a free version of SketchUP.

3d Studio Maya

No, it’s not a frankenstein-esque fusion of 3ds Max and Maya. This could be an alternative name for the latest Autodesk Entertainment Creation Suite Ultimate because it includes both of the power products. The whole pack includes Autodesk Maya and Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Softimage, Autodesk MotionBuilder, Autodesk Mudbox, Autodesk Sketchbook Designer. Read more

eyeon Releases the Next Dimension

Eyeon released the software Dimension, a stereoscopic 3D tool that is being hailed as a milestone in the industry since it’s premiere at IBC in September 2011. Dimension is designed to solve a number of common problems in stereoscopic film and broadcast production that would normally require a large amount of manual rotoscoping and paintwork to solve.
